Background

The Research Centre for Waste and Resource Management (the Centre) at THEi was opened on 18 November 2016. Supported by a grant from the Research Grants Council (RGC) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China (Project No.: UGC/IDS25/15), the Centre aims to become an industry-based research hub for upgrading the technological capabilities and improving the competitiveness of environment-related industries in Hong Kong and the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region. The Centre will focus on high-level applied research in collaboration with industrial partners to develop effective methods and technologies for tackling current environmental problems.

Research Projects

It engages industrial partners in applied research and technology development in six defined areas of solid waste management and recycling:

  1. Food-waste

  2. Construction and industrial solid wastes

  3. Plastics/polymeric and glass wastes

  4. Fly-ash and bottom-ash from solid waste incineration facilities

  5. Landfill extension, enlargement, and refunctioning

  6. Impacts of waste minimisation on eco-balance and the ecological system
