Programme Aims

With the staunch support from the industrial partners and stakeholders, the Programme has been successfully accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) pegged at QF Level 5. The Programme has made a significant breakthrough in the local Vocational and Professional Education and Training (VPET) development and was developed as the second bespoke skill-based programme in Hong Kong with the aim of providing experienced power electrical engineering practitioners with an extended value-borne progression pathway for professional development. The Programme aims to nurture Power Electrical Meister (aka Skills Masters/Industry Masters) who can demonstrate occupational, managerial and pedagogical competencies in the full range of power electrical specialisms.

 

Career Prospects

 

On completion of the Programme, graduates will typically go on to take up senior roles in technical projects and operation management within power electrical engineering contractor firms. The role of Meister sits at the apex of the technical leadership hierarchy below the role of lead project or design engineer.

 

Entry Requirements

 

Admission is on a competitive basis, with applicants judged on their ability to meet the entrance requirements of the Programme. The minimum entrance requirements of the Programme are summarised as follows:

 

  1. Professional Qualification and Industry Experience:
  • Grade B Registered Electrical Worker (REW) (Cap 406);

AND

  1. Academic Qualifications and Experience Requirement:
  • A relevant Higher Diploma or Professional Diploma at QF Level 4 AND at least 8 years’ post REW Grade B work experience, OR
  • Qualification deemed equivalent by the Programme Board*  AND at least 8 years’ post REW Grade B work experience.

*Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) qualifications in all 4 clusters in Electrical Engineering pegged at QF Level 4, namely Low Voltage Electrical Installation, Design for Low Voltage Electrical Supply Facilities, Repair and Maintenance for Low Voltage Electrical Supply Facilities, and Electrical Installation Operation and Management are regarded as a qualification deemed equivalent by the Programme Board.

Mature applicants at the age of 35 or above and having minimum 15 years of power electrical work experience, in which not less than 5 years of REW Grade B work experience may also be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants are required to pass an admission interview and provide their employer’s nomination for admission purpose.

 

Employer’s Nomination, Endorsement and Signature

 

The applicant should be nominated by his/her employer to study the programme. The employer should declare that the information about the work experience given by the applicant, to the best of the employer’s knowledge, is accurate and complete. The employer should also be committed to providing extensive workplace learning and assessment opportunities to students by playing an active role in:

  • providing students with the opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills required for the job;
  • signing off students’ workplace training logs;
  • allocating experienced staff to act as trainers, verifiers and assessors; and
  • providing formal training in the workplace, such as process run-throughs, formal on-job training, etc.
Recognition of an Examination for Registration as a Grade C Electrical Worker

“Three modules’ examinations of the Programme, namely ‘Low Voltage Installations 1’, ‘Low Voltage Installations 2’, and ‘Electrical Systems & Machines’, with marks of 70% and 50% for multiple-choice questions and long questions respectively” is considered acceptable as an Examination approved by EMSD stipulated in Regulation 6(2)(b)(iii) of the Electricity (Registration) Regulations for the purpose of registration as a Grade C Electrical Worker.


Graduates from the Programme who pass the relevant examinations are required to fulfill other relevant requirement stipulated in Regulation 6(2)(b) of the Electricity (Registration) Regulations when they apply for registration as Grade C electrical workers.

 

Tuition Fee

 

The total tuition fee for academic year 2024/25 is HK$90,400.

(HK$90,000 being the tuition fee and HK$400 being the caution money).

Tuition fees are subject to annual reviews.

Vplus Subsidy Scheme

Students studying this Programme may apply for Vplus Engineering of the HKSAR Government (https://cpe.vtc.edu.hk/ad/vplus).
