THEi’s 5-year strategic plan for the academic years 2023/24 to 2027/28 was formulated in 2023. The Institute’s strategic plan was drawn up under the following five key strategic themes:

The strategic plans and initiatives to propel and advance the Institute towards its short-term and long-term goals under the five strategic themes, and pave the way toward the University of Applied Science (UAS) status, are set out below:

 

  1. Strengthen THEi’s branding and image with positive, concrete substances and tangible elements.

 

    1. Develop and position THEi as a unique and leading Applied Sciences and Technology Institution in the region with a focus on cultivating graduates with both academic proficiency and advanced industry-relevant practical skills, to support and foster the industry development.
    2. Implement a new marketing strategy to promote THEi with the utilisation of appropriate and tailor-made marketing tools, approaches and avenues for different regions, to effectively target and engage the intended audience.
    3. Formulate a robust brand image with precise message(s)/slogan(s), encapsulating the essence of THEi’s brand identity for application across all promotional and publicity materials, consistently reinforcing THEi’s brand identity and augmenting brand recognition among the target audience.
    4. Adopt a niche area-focused, instead of programme-focused, approach to promote THEi to external parties, emphasising THEi’s specialties and distinctiveness and their industry relevance.
    5. Proactively outreach to, establish relationships and build connections with local, Mainland and international organisations and institutions, as well as the general public, to promote THEi, gain exposure and raise brand awareness of THEi.

 

 

  1. Maximise and optimise the utlisation of existing resources to bolster niche programme and research areas.

 

  1. Allocate resources with a focus on six niche areas to eliminate or minimise competitions with other local self-financed institutions and to develop our niche areas as the preeminent in the region.
  2. Strengthen the applied research and teaching skills, capabilities and competencies, and upgrade the professional currency of our academics through the implementation of new co-working funds for institute-industry partnerships, and teaching relief funds for staff, and continuous education and professional development of our staff. 
  3. Review and revamp existing academic programmes to enhance industry connectedness and integration, market relevance, attractiveness and viability by aligning with present and future industry needs and demands.
  4. Facilitate cross-disciplinary projects and activities by promoting resource and facility sharing.
  5. Establish joint centres/laboratories collaboratively with local institutions and Mainland/international partners to share facilities and space, generate economies of scale, support and augment our teaching activities, and strengthen applied learning.
  6. Ensure the long-term sustainability, relevance and marketability of our programmes and strive to minimise programme phase-out to avoid negatively impacting our graduates’ career development in the future

     
  1. Advance applied research and innovation that will positively impact and deliver productive outcomes to the industry and our local communities, and at the same time, drive commercialisation.

 

  1. Work closely with the industry to understand the industry and market needs, develop seed/proof-of-concept projects, identify commercial opportunities and devise strategies for commercialisation of research outcomes.
  2. Enhance project-based learning, encourage applied research projects and support student design competitions to foster innovative ideas that can offer technologically-advanced solutions and/or effective methodologies for new business development in the industry.
  3. Develop flexible, efficient and effective policies for institute-industry collaboration, along with intellectual property (IP) sharing mechanisms, to stimulate mutually beneficial collaborative projects between the industry and THEi.


 

  1. Redevelop a new student recruitment strategy to improve student intakes from local, Mainland and overseas markets, while expanding our presence in the Greater Bay Area.

 

  1. Conduct targeted physical outreach to specific institutions in Mainland China and overseas countries to establish connections and collaborations.
  2. Strategically participate in education fairs, roadshows, exhibitions and other publicity events in Mainland China and overseas countries to support a more targeted recruitment drive by promoting to the right student pools and enticing them to apply for our programmes.
  3. Develop new joint degree, Master’s degree and other postgraduate programmes with Mainland and overseas partners.
  4. Co-create joint education/technological advancement centres with Mainland/international partners.
  5. Enhance the Institute’s capability and capacity to accommodate a larger pool of local and non-local students.
  6. Engage with offer holders through diverse activities and communications to sustain their interest and awareness of THEi programmes, and boost up the conversion rate from application to registration.

 

 

  1. Tailor unique, distinctive and/or customised programmes and courses to facilitate the growth and future development of the industries and reinforce our standing and reputation in critical strategic domains.

 

  1. Develop short courses, and Professional Diploma and Professional Certificate programmes, recognised by locally and/or internationally renowned professional bodies, encompassing topical in-demand knowledge and skills in emerging areas, to upskill and reskill the workforce, and to enhance our brand and capability.
  2. Develop Bachelor and Master’s degree programmes, taught in Putonghua to support manpower supply for the industries in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area.
