Programme #2: Creating an Interactive Classroom
About the Programme
Creating an Interactive Classroom Programme is offered by THEi Learning Commons. This programme aims to use various innovative technologies together with pedagogies in support of learning and teaching.
The programme is designed for all THEi academic staff / THEi staff.
The programme objectives are as follows:
- To enhance teachers’ competency in applying innovative pedagogies and information and communications technology
- To equip teachers with the knowledge and skills needed in supporting an interactive classroom learning environment
Programme Learning Outcomes
It is intended that by the end of this programme, participants will be able:
- To devise appropriate pedagogical strategies in a classroom learning environment
- To facilitate students’ learning by adopting the technology, problem-based learning, collaborative learning and inclusive approaches
- To develop a network with teaching and instructing staff from different provisions for collaboration and sharing of good practices
The programme comprises three modules to reflect on participants' learning and teaching. It is a face-to-face learning module.
Mode of Delivery
A range of teaching and learning activities such as lectures, experience sharing, discussions and hands-on computer-based learning would be used.
Participating staff will be awarded Continuous Professional Development (CPD) hours and the record will be uploaded centrally by the HR.
Also, participants will be awarded an electronic Certificate of Attendance of the workshop.
Module 1: Engaging Student in the Classroom (Socrative, PollEverywhere, LiveSlides, uReply, Kahoot!, Slido)
It is a classroom app for fun, effective classroom engagement. No matter where or how to teach, Socrative allows the teacher to instantly connect with students as learning happens. Quickly assess students with prepared activities or on-the-fly questions to get immediate insight into student understanding. Then use auto-populated results to determine the best instructional approach to most effectively drive learning.
2. Poll Everywhere
It is a way to gather live responses in any venue, conferences, concerts, classrooms, and company off-sites — anywhere with internet.
LiveSlides is more than just making the web presentable. It is about making it easier for the presenter to collect and package the information he/she needs to communicate.
- uReply - Good teacher-student interactions and communications are key to many modern teaching and learning concepts, such as active learning and student-oriented learning. Technology can assist these much-needed interactions and communications.
- uReply is a cloud-based student response system (SRS), which was designed to facilitate classroom interactions using mobile devices. It was developed at the CUHK and now have users across many of the UGC-funded universities
Kahoot! Is a game-based learning platform, free for teachers of awesome and classroom superheroes. Play, learn, have fun and celebrate together.
Slido is a technology company that enhances communication and increases interaction at events and meetings. We enable users to crowdsource top questions to drive meaningful conversations, engage participants with live polls and capture valuable event data.
Module 2: Tools to create independent and reflective learners (Microsoft Add-ins, PowerPoint Recording, Podcasts, Hudl Technique and self-graded rubrics)
- Microsoft Office Add-ins
Office add-ins provide this kind of added functionality to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office apps. There are more than a handful of these plugins you can install to enhance Microsoft Office, whether you’re using Office 2013 or 2016, Office Online, or Office on the iPad.
- PowerPoint Recording
Narrations and timings can enhance a web-based or self-running slide show. If you have a sound card, microphone, and speakers, and (optionally) a webcam, you can record your PowerPoint presentation and capture narrations, slide timings, and ink gestures.
After you have made the recording, it's like any other presentation that can be played for you or your audience in Slide Show—or you can save the presentation as a video file.
- Hudl Technique
It is an action analysis application. It is most suitable for teachers or coaches to analyze student's dynamics one by one and can compare with other films to improve students' posture during exercise.
Podcasts is a source of information gathering in the age of the Internet. It’s a way to listen to experts talk about the topics you care about and it’s relatively easy to find great podcasts. It can create or prescribe a podcast for students to listen to before the lesson.
- Self-graded rubrics
It might sound crazy, but letting students grade themselves is a good way to ensure a fair final grade and an improvement in your class' study skills. And despite what you might expect, self grading doesn't mean that everyone in your class will walk away with an 'A'. If done correctly, self grading can be a great way for students to improve their work and understand why they perform the way they do. Module 3: An Application to E-Learning (Google Classroom)
You can create and edit text documents right on Google Docs in your web browser. No special software is required. Also, multiple people can work at the same time, you can see people’s changes as they make them, and every change is saved automatically. Google Classroom is a cloud learning management platform that allows teachers to create courses and post assignments. The whole class can share and communicate on the platform, and teachers can easily track students' progress.
