Abstract

Intercultural communication (ICC) as a field of enquiry was founded in the 1950s to address the practical need among American diplomats to ‘familiarise’ themselves with the cultures of their enemies. It is now a much more scholarly field of research that subsumes many other well-established scholarly fields, due to the intellectual connections and shared interests in the notion of culture and its impact on communication.  In this seminar, Prof ZHU Hua from Birkbeck College, University of London will outline the key challenges facing researchers, users and trainers in ICC at the cross-road of theory and practice and aim to suggest some ways forward.
